Dr. Valerio Verrea
TAROT de BESANÇON
Limited Edition and Hand-Numbered!
The Besançon Tarot, restored by Dr. Valerio Verrea, reinterprets an ancient 18th-century deck. Characterized by archetypal symbols like Juno and Jupiter in place of religious figures, it explores profound human themes. With only 500 numbered copies, it's a true treasure for enthusiasts and collectors.
The Besançon Tarot is a particular 18th-century deck created by Jean-Baptiste Benois, contemporary to the Conver deck used by Jodorowsky.
Born in the context of the Protestant Reformation between Switzerland, France and southern Germany, these tarot cards maintain the structure of the Marseilles but with some distinctive differences, the most evident being the replacement of the Pope and Popess with Jupiter and Juno.
This modification, beyond its historical-religious significance, offers new archetypal interpretative perspectives, which I leave you the pleasure of discovering in this wonderful deck where you'll find the 22 Major Arcana restored by me for Tarology.

The Author's Private Letter
“I wondered how I could expand on the wonderful work done by Alejandro and Cristobal Jodorowsky with the Tarot.
The famous Jodorowsky-Camoin deck of 1997 entered Tarot history by bringing to light, giving color and understanding to the beautiful deck by Nicolas Conver from 1760.
Following the success of this deck, there have been numerous imitators who, also referring to the Conver, have reproduced many versions of the same deck. However, all these versions bring nothing significantly new to the world of Tarot scholars and enthusiasts.
Having Juno and Jupiter, in fact, while maintaining the concept of connection with the divine of Arcana II and V, accentuates in these cards the characteristics of maternal and paternal, bringing us back to the evolutionary vision of the child’s experience facing the “omnipotence” of parents. This, during Tarological Reading, opens a field of exploration of great depth.
Some other significant differences of the Besançon Tarot compared to the Marseilles can be found in Arcanum XV, the Devil and in the Moon, Arcanum XVIII. Further differences will be your pleasure to notice.
Rediscovering these ancient blades is therefore a way to expand and improve understanding of the archetypal meaning that comes from each Arcanum. The logic is that of comparison which makes the diversity between various Tarot versions help build a broader and more articulated vision of each card’s message.
The deck I created, revisiting the Benois in a contemporary key, therefore doesn’t want to be “better” than others, but to offer a different, complementary and, in some aspects new, perspective in the vast panorama of traditional Tarot.”
